The Daily Vigil, 7/28/17: Victory From the Jaws of Defeat
At the risk of speaking too soon- I think we finally did it, guys. I think we can declare victory.
Senators Murkowski and Collins, whom have been the lone adults in the room of Republican Senators from the beginning, deserve the credit here. McCain will get the headline credit for his unexpected vote, but he doesn’t deserve it. Sure, it was very dramatic, and I’m glad he voted as he did. But he also could have avoided this whole circus if he’d have killed the damn thing in the first place. Waiting until the last minute for a skin-of-your-teeth vote makes for good TV but horrible policy.
Whatever. McConnell says he’s moving on, and may he never fucking return to this topic. I think we’re safe from this abomination.
To all the Resistance out there, who protested and organized through doubt and continuous setbacks, this is our victory. The Democratic line held up and we convinced just enough Republicans through the sheer weight of our activism. This victory is ours, and it should be celebrated! I’m sure there’ll be some new crisis on Monday, so go relax and enjoy the weekend.
That’s it, no more Vigil for today. I’m gonna go pound a bottle of Mylanta and watch the sun rise.
