The Daily Vigil, 7/21/17: Pardon Me While I Burst Into Flames

Incubus Lyrics and Constitutional Crises: I would like to touch on the fact that we’re careening towards a constitutional crisis of untold proportions. The President is currently investigating ways to pardon his family and himself. I would remind everyone reading that a pardon “does not signify innocence“- in effect, if Trump pardons anyone for shady Russia shit, it means he’s admitting they were involved in something so dastardly as to warrant a pardon. There’s no two ways about it. So if Trump starts handing out pardons like the addled old man down the road hands out hard candy on Halloween, and the GOP doesn’t respond in some tangible and appropriate way? Then we have hard proof that the entire party is redeemable, and wholly comfortable with having a traitorous puppet President, as long as they think they can pass their own pet projects through Congress.

I do believe in my heart that this will pass, and things will get better. I believe that we, the people, will make things better. But I also believe that things are going to get much worse before that point. So keep your shoes laced up, its about to get ugly.

“We cant believe we haven’t suppressed you peasants like this before!”
-The Kochs, probably

Theft of the Senate: Speaking of things getting ugly, here’s a Koch Brothers-backed plot to take away your ability to directly elect your Senators!

…I wish I were kidding. But no, that’s precisely what this is. ALEC, the ultra-conservative legislation factory, convened to write model bills that would repeal the 17th Amendment. Instead of you and I electing our Senators, they would now be elected by our State Legislatures- which, conveniently, Republicans control a majority of! This would catapult the Senate to the deepest shade of red one can imagine. Remember that the only thing that’s prevented the Republicans’ health care bill from passing has been the Democrats and the few remaining Moderate Republicans who’ve objected; if a bill like this were to pass, that protection would be shattered, and a horde of Koch-funded first-world anarchists would descend on the country like a plague of locusts. We would see bill after bill passed in the name of “personal freedom” or “liberty”, which as we know are code words for “corporations can now literally do whatever they want”.

Its critical that we keep an eye on the stuff happening behind the scenes while this Trumpian tornado tears through Washington. You can rest assured that people are banking on our attention being divided. But that’s why we’re here at the Daily Vigil, grabbing some of the critical headlines you may have missed and bringing them back to light.
