The Daily Vigil, 7/11/17: Hat Trick
Hat Trick: The New York Times are apparently fed up with The Washington Post’s dominance of recent major scoops. To whit, they have gone on an absolute bombing run since Saturday, and in their sights is Donald Trump Jr. I don’t want to spend too long on this issue because it’s being covered by literally everyone but I’d be remiss not to include it. Ahem.
- Saturday, July 8th: NYT reports that Don Jr. had met with a woman named Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer of questionable repute. Veselnitskaya released a statement that day saying that the meeting hadn’t contained anything about the Presidential campaign.
- Sunday, July 9th: Don Jr. comes out and essentially says “lol no it totally did”, going on to explain that he’d met with Veselnitskaya because she’d promised dirt on Clinton, but that he’d been disappointed when she’d “only” wanted to talk about anti-Russia sanctions, and that the meeting ultimately went nowhere.
- Monday, July 10th: NYT reports that three individual sources who saw the email could confirm that the source of Veselnitskaya’s dirt was indeed the Russian government, and that Don Jr. knew this before taking the meeting.
So if you hear anyone screeching something to the effect of “THIS STILL DOESN’T PROVE ANYTHING!!!1”, just link them this.
Siege of the Ivory Tower: If you’ve ever heard arch-Conservatives talk about how college is a “safe space” for snowflakes who get liberally indoctrinated, but think that nobody in their right mind could really believe such a thing, think again. More GOP than not apparently hold negative views of higher education, which appears to be a first. This is troubling because it stands as another progression of the war on facts, a concerted effort to make our world more and more relative- thereby shrinking the space in which everyone can agree on something. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that college kids can sometimes get a little carried away in their fervor to champion a cause, and in doing so, define themselves. But make no mistake, this has nothing to do with anything actually happening with the students. This anti-intellectual stain is at its heart an authoritarian one, and would decry academia regardless of what was happening on campus. Because of this, we can safely know that the people pushing these tropes of college as a “safe space” that’s degrading America, all have something to gain.
Take Him at His Word: Aww you thought you could get through more than a day without me mentioning health care? You sweet, sweet summer child. Unfortunately not; Mike Pence is saying that the GOP is within spitting distance of repealing the ACA. And you know what? I’m inclined to believe him. Sure, it could be that he’s playing the good cheerleader just for the sake of doing so, but with the stakes this high I’m not willing to relax on account of a “maybe”. Assume he is telling the truth on this, and KEEP CALLING YOUR SENATORS.
