The Daily Vigil, 6/8/17: The Comey Kerfuffle
Hailey’s Comey-t: An apt pun, considering this could be a once-in-a-lifetime testimony. Anyway, just about everyone and their mother is fixing to broadcast Comey’s statements and I’m sure we’ll be dissecting it for the next week. And to the surprise of exactly nobody, Trump is planning to live tweet the whole affair. So while I’m sure we’ll have some great memes by day’s end, let’s take a moment to reflect on a few things.
First, this is probably not going to “sink Trump” in the next month or so. If you were hoping for a speedy resolution after Comey says his peace… hate to burst your bubble, but nope. This gets a lot of stuff on record, under oath. This is laying a foundation.
Second, the GOP is relieved to say “See? Trump’s not under investigation! Case closed!”. They say this because they are desperate, and also because it is an easy misrepresentation. Comey’s initial statement says that Trump himself wasn’t under investigation- past tense- months ago when he’d asked. Comey explicitly states in his memo that, as of March 30th 2017,
“I did not tell the President that the FBI and the Department of Justice had been reluctant to make public statements that we did not have an open case on President Trump for a number of reasons, most importantly because it would create a duty to correct, should that change.” (Emphasis mine).
And lastly, remember that the hopeful goal of this whole process- that Trump gets removed from office and thrown in jail along with his goons- is still at this time a very, very unlikely proposition. Do not expect this investigation to magically solve all our problems. We must continue to organize and activate as if Trump will be with us until 2020. So with that said, lets focus on some other things.
♫ ♬ …And Don’cha Brownback No More, No More, No More, No More ♫ ♬: Behold, the face of failure! The man who wrote a budget so absurdly disastrous that even the Kansas State GOP had to finally abandon it! Sam Brownback, Governor of Kansas, recently had his money-bleeding budget obliterated after years of the state being unable to pay its bills. Why, its almost as if you need to have some kind of an income in order to pay for shit, and solely relying on tax cuts to “stimulate growth” is a ridiculous concept!
I mention this because while it is heartening that Kansas is (possibly, maybe) starting to wake from its Libertarian nightmare, Trump’s budget is built on many of the same bullshit principles. He expects to stimulate growth by cutting taxes for the obscenely wealthy, and this will stimulate jobs (this is “trickle-down economics”, and it doesn’t work). But if they can defeat it in Kansas, we can defeat it anywhere. Remember to keep calling your Senators and Representatives, and tell them to oppose Trump’s budget.
Georgia’s 6th: I will keep repeating this: DO NOT ASSUME GEORGIA IS IN THE BAG. No matter what, this is not over till its over. Do not assume that Jon Ossoff is going to win because Handel said she’s against a living wage. Do not assume that Ossoff is going to win because he used to have a +7 margin of victory; that MoV is now +1-2. That is well within the margin of error in a district that reliably votes Republican. So if you haven’t contributed yet, get off your ass. Donate, phonebank, textbank, knock on doors. We have 12 days until the June 20th election day. Lets make sure we leave everything on the field.
Villain in a Half-Shell: You didn’t forget about this guy, did you? Mitch McConnell is promising a Republican Health Care vote by July 4th. Their bill is different from the House’s AHCA, though we don’t know exactly how different because it’s all been worked up behind closed doors. The CBO is working on scoring this as we speak, reportedly. In addition to everything else you call your members of Congress about, remember to tell them that you oppose anything that even remotely resembles the AHCA. Leave them no wiggle room; we need universal health care!
Britain’s Election: Woo, almost forgot this one! For those who don’t know, Britain’s election is today. If you’re a Brit, please remember to vote! If you’re a Yank like most of us here at DigitalLeft, please keep our Limey friends across the pond in your thoughts- they could start pulling themselves back from the brink if Corbyn’s Labour party gains ground. Good luck!
